Effingham Company Working for Peanuts
Published Oct 17, 2007

McCall Farms’ numerous products include Peanut Patch Boiled Peanuts.
Imagine boiling eight million pounds of raw peanuts a year. That’s the amount the McCall Farms cannery in Effingham processes each year following the farm’s August peanut harvest.
And peanuts are by no means the only commodity the cannery handles. It sells more than 1.5 million servings of various products a day, mostly vegetables, says Woody Swink, sales manager for McCall Farms.
Swink is quick to credit the consumer for the success of the family-owned company.
“We’re only as good as the consumer that buys our product,” he says, adding that sales have increased 10 to 12 percent in each of its past five years.
The most popular item produced at the 350,000-square-foot canning facility remains South Carolina’s official snack, the boiled peanut.
One of the company’s larger-name buyers of peanuts is Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. The company also sells to nearly all of the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference football stadiums, Swink says.
